Maintenance & Care
TAJDO's main mission is to sustainably improve the welfare of street dogs in Zanzibar and Tanzania. We are committed to ensuring that every animal has access to food, water, medical care, and a safe environment – a right every dog deserves.
A key component of our work is the construction of dog bars in strategic locations. These dog bars are built by dedicated locals using locally sourced materials and feature a thoughtful design that meets both the hygienic and practical needs of dogs. Each dog bar includes two sections: one for fresh dog food and one for clean water.
To ensure the dog bars are continuously used, the TAJDO team conducts weekly tours of the island. During these tours, the locations are checked, the dog bars are cleaned, and refilled with food and water. This way, we can guarantee that the street dogs are always well cared for.
Development & Vision
Our mission goes far beyond simply providing for basic needs.
We place street dogs in loving families so that they can find a safe and happy home.
At the same time, TAJDO works closely with a local veterinarian to ensure the medical care of the street dogs. This includes regular vaccinations, necessary surgeries, and spaying/neutering. These measures are not only crucial for the dogs' health but also serve a sustainable goal:
The controlled regulation of the street dog population.
Experienced animal caretakers carefully carry out the sterilizations to limit the spread of the dogs in the long term. This ensures the welfare of the animals while simultaneously contributing to an improved quality of life for local residents. Through this sustainable approach, TAJDO strikes a balance between protecting the dogs and harmonious coexistence with the community.
Furthermore, it is our vision to be able to build a dog shelter in Zanzibar.
Education & Enlightenment
In many parts of Zanzibar, shaped by a strong Muslim culture, street dogs are often considered "unclean" and are only tolerated if they are deemed useful. This misinformation has unfortunately led to many dogs being neglected or even abused – despite the fact that the Quran offers no justification for the mistreatment of animals, especially dogs.
TAJDO is working on several levels to change this situation.
Furthermore, educating people is a key concern for us. We want to raise awareness of the needs and rights of dogs and promote respect for these loyal creatures.
TAJDO is firmly convinced that this commitment has a positive impact on the entire community: By promoting both humans and animals, harmonious coexistence, respect and a conscious approach to living beings in Zanzibar become possible.
